We have posted photos, archive's items, visits, workshops, interventions, co-delivered and co-planned activity to raise awareness about mental health & women. Still, Women's day should not just be celebrated for only one day; if we are aiming at an equal society, we need change. All those who identify as Women still suffer enormous disadvantages in this and past society & culture, and since the beginning of our project, we have researched & shared first-hand experiences how women were treated, considered, judged and oppressed in mental health hospitals, and by past and current psychiatry.
Looking at the Case Book from the early 20th century, an admission patient's record, you can read on what ground, female patients were admitted to mental health hospitals. A woman (name & details can't be revealed for privacy) was admitted to a mental health hospital after husband's call due to her depression. This woman had three children, three stillbirths and several miscarriages. I wonder why she was depressed?! What is our society doing now? Recently, an MP proposed a bill demanding that all mothers in the UK are given a six-week post-natal mental health check. We hope that it will pass, it will be mandatory, and it will further facilitate further needed support and speaking out about mental health.

Contemporary Sketches mixed with archival Pages from the Female Case Book 1911 - 1913 of patients admitted to the St Nicholas Mental Health Hospital. Names & photos were taken out to protect and respect identity. We looked at the stories of women who were admitted to mental health hospitals which gave us a real sense and sadness of how people were treated and interpreted. Some of our participants are interested in speaking back to women through poems, acknowledging each individual and women’s life, aiming at leaving an important legacy for future generations. It helped us reflect especially on how language has changed compared to nowadays!

The earliest use of the land now known as St. Nicholas hospital was agricultural with open fields dominating the village of Coxlodge in 1858. In 1865, the Magistrates of Newcastle purchased the Farmhouse knows as Dodds Farm (here in the picture) for a new asylum in Newcastle.

Enjoy our experience in this #throwbackthursday when we visited the Bethlem Museum of The Mind, a museum that represents the history of the Bethlem Royal Hospital, its programme of care, and its patients, housed in a stunning Art Deco building. We headed down to London with a group of 8 participants & volunteers of the Heads & Tales project to explore one of the few UK museums that address mental health conditions, and to comprehend how such representation is addressed. It has been a great experience, which sparkled some challenging question marks especially when it comes to enhancing the voices of those represented and how they should be presented.
Also, you can have an insight from our participants feedback looking at their sketched opinions and creative writing.

Pic of the Week from our Creative Archive Workshop at @chillistudios is this sketch from one of our participants reinterpreting a drawing of “George Elliot Emperor of the World” found in TWAM Archives at @discovery_mus Such an interesting piece of art, who have risen many questions about the belongingness: is George Elliot the Artist or more likely an artist with a satirical mind illustrating a well know Character of the North East in late 1800s. George Elliot was also an established businessman and Mine owner from Gateshead, then became a Conservative Party Member of the Parliament for North Durham in the mid 19th century.
However, George Eliot was also the pen name chosen by Mary Ann Evans, a Victorian writer who chose a male pen name so that her works were taken seriously, in response to an 1856 essay she wrote for the Westminster Review, ‘Silly Novels by Lady Novelists’. We want to find out more before making any accreditation, but many similarities caught our attention.

We are currently seeking volunteers willing to:
- Research: Combing finer details and references from the sessions we have run.
- Data basing: the mass of work and archive items we have collected.
- Editing: Film and audio editing needed to make items we have accessible for public.

-We have about 5 hours to walk around Museum and the surrounding area
-5.30pm leave for train (2 more changes on return)
-6.06pmTrain leaves West Wickham
-10.30pm arrive in Newcastle
-Travel home will have to be independently organised from Newcastle Train station.

Emphasis is on the visit to the Museum but there will be a bit of time after to visit the area.
Please bring pack lunch and money for food, refreshments and fun.

The day we visited the Great & Tiny War house @wearewunderbar we gathered together to explore and listen the everyday lives of Bobby Baker’s family from women’s perspectives. An incredible experience of a place that celebrates the women who carry on running houses while keeping families together. We’ve learned a lot about memorable but also heartbreaking moments during the WW1, and the impact of the conflict on the mental health of the whole family.

The last picture is titled “The Rails”. The rollercoaster represents the turbulent highs and lows of living with mental health conditions, but it also evokes the use of mental health as a vehicle for entertainment. Anthony Stevens is a self-taught textile Artist which artworks are a form of therapy and selfexpression. On Monday 14th May, the Heads & Tales Mental Health Heritage project will hold the Research & Creative Archive workshop as part of the artists in residency program at Chilli Studios from 11 am to 3 pm.
We're looking into the importance of language and media in mental health throughout some creative activities delivered by our artist Nelli Stravropoulou. Come join us to explore the use of creative activities in understanding mental health with writing exercise inspired by archival items (e.g., diary entry, letter writing); with original photography, and more and more activities to express your point of view regarding the comprehension of mental health.

Annualy each year we run a conference on mental health! This year it will be a weekend long conference on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd April, you are wecome to come to either day of events or both!

Each day will have different events, where we will explore information about different mental health topics, panels with personal experiences shared, workshops on different topics and practical coping mechanisms! This is alongside several keynote speakers, expert sessions, and even a free lunch.

The aim of this conference is to question your everyday thinking about mental health, and instigate discussion around why this is still a taboo topic in modern society. There are a huge range of sessions on offer for you to check out, so please keep an eye out for the speakers being announced to see what’s on offer.
